GERALDINE AUERBACH

Geraldine Auerbach MBE is the Director of the Jewish Music Institute, founder-director of the London International Jewish Music Festival and co-ordinator of the JMI IFYC. Born in Kimberley, South Africa, she came to the UK in 1962 where she taught art in a girl's school for 26 years until 2000. She was awarded the MBE in 2000 in recognition of her role in raising the profile of Jewish music and culture both in this country and abroad.

THE MUSICAL HERITAGE OF THE JEWS

DR ALEXANDER KNAPP

Alexander Knapp will cover the most significant developments in Jewish music around the world, from biblical times through to the present day. Aspects of liturgical, folk, popular and classical styles within Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Oriental Jewish and Israeli contexts, will be illustrated audio-visually.

Dr Alexander Knapp is a graduate of Selwyn College, Cambridge,with MA, MusB, and PhD degrees in music, as well as HonARAM, LRAM and ARCM diplomas. He has performed, composed, researched, lectured, broadcast and published writings on Jewish music for some 40 years in the UK, USA, many parts of Europe, Israel, Eastern Siberia and China. His most recent academic post, prior to taking early retirement in 2006,was as ‘Joe Loss Lecturer in Jewish Music’ at SOAS.

Anna Roth is an Education Officer at the Jewish Museum. She is a former primary school teacher with a background in design and informal education. She has worked at the museum for two years, working with all from age 3 to 103! She is responsible for planning and running creative workshops for school groups, cheder groups, university students and adult interest groups.
